2017 Status Report on Women at Ohio State available for distribution

Each year, The Women's Place (TWP) produces the Status Report on Women at Ohio State. The report uses data to evaluate progress toward increasing diversity and promoting equity for women. This year, new data on civil service staff is published on TWP's website.

The 2017 edition also highlights an increasing number of women prepared for top leadership roles and efforts to remove barriers and prepare more women at Ohio State to advance their careers. While data reveals that little progress has been made in advancing women to top leadership roles at the university, statistics show that 40 percent of the new 2016 cohort of department chairs are women, which is a significant increase. This indicates movement towards gender parity at the departmental level.

In addition, this year’s status report focuses on “pipeline practices” that help women advance at Ohio State. The Women’s Place collaborates with various campus groups that offer these practices. Some of these groups are highlighted in the report, including the President and Provost’s Council on Women, University Staff Advisory Committee Diversity and Inclusion Task Force, Association of Staff and Faculty Women, and Medical Center Employee Resource Groups.

The 2017 status report brings attention to additional initiatives driving change in the sluggish pipeline. The Women’s Place and partners are administering the NSF-funded Advocates and Allies for Equity initiative, which offers training and engagement for male faculty and staff in an effort to engage men in cultivating an environment of inclusive excellence within their departments and at Ohio State. Ohio State also partners with the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) in the Professorial Advancement Initiative to support underrepresented postdoctoral scholars in STEMM fields who are transitioning into faculty positions. The goal is to double the number of underrepresented minority faculty hired across the BTAA.
