Dr. Rachel Bowen named faculty fellow at The Women’s Place

The Women's Place is pleased to announce that Dr. Rachel Bowen has joined our office as faculty fellow and assistant director.

Dr. Rachel Bowen, (JD, Georgetown University, 2002; PhD, Georgetown University, 2007), is an associate professor in Political Science at The Ohio State University Mansfield campus. She has expertise in legal politics, Central America and women’s rights. She is an alum of the President and Provost Leadership Institute and also leads the Diversity Committee of the University Senate.

Dr. Bowen teaches American, global, and comparative politics; constitutional law; and gender and politics. Her research focuses on the intersection of law and politics with a special focus on Latin America. She also focuses on focuses on judicial independence and judicial activism; Central American politics; state responses to gendered crime in Latin America; and the relationship between violence and political participation. In addition, she has served as an expert witness on security conditions facing Central American child migrants.

Her book, The Achilles Heel of Democracy: Judicial Autonomy and the Rule of Law in Central America was published by Cambridge University Press in 2017. She is currently preparing a second book manuscript with the preliminary title Fighting Feminicide, Engendering Citizenship. This manuscript compares the scope and impact of feminist anti-violence activism in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.
