In conjunction with the Faculty Women of Color in the Academy (FWCA) National Conference, the Pre-Conference Writing Retreat offers women of color scholars structure and strategies to help manage the challenges of writing in a safe, encouraging community within which to connect, build their network, learn, and celebrate one another's victories.

This daylong, in-person, retreat-based training teaches effective, evidence-based strategies to scholars who are struggling to write. The unique format complements FWCA’s focus on supportive, empowering professional development. The Pre-Conference Writing Retreat does not simply allow participants to make progress on their writing. It also increases their productivity and satisfaction by providing the 1) training they need to get their writing done, 2) time to practice what they learned, 3) coaching they need to hone their skills, and 4) a community to support their progress.

By the end of each retreat, you will:

  • have made significant, measurable progress on your writing project
  • understand one of the key barriers to effective writing and its impact on your particular writing process
  • understand and have implemented at least one evidence-based strategy for addressing that challenge
  • be able to integrate that strategy into your regular writing practice
  • have expanded and deepened your network of intellectual and professional support
