ASFW Voice & Influence Series: Women at Work

Join ASFW for a six part series of hour-long programs that leverage the Voice & Influence curriculum designed by Stanford University Center for the Advancement of Women’s Leadership. The aim of Voice & Influence is “to empower women and men to realize their professional potential and help them create organizations where workers can excel and thrive.” Participants will watch a short video on professional and personal development and then work through an interactive discussion guide in small groups.

Part II: Women at Work, will draw from interviews with hundreds of women leaders in their professions. We will discuss the four persistent patterns of gender bias that were uncovered, as well as the strategies that can be used to overcome them.

Light snacks will be provided.

Sexual Civility and Empowerment Committee (SCEC): End of Year Celebration

Sexual Civility and Empowerment (SCE) warmly extends a formal invitation for you to attend their Sexual Civility and Empowerment Committee (SCEC) meetings for the academic year. The April meeting will be an end of year celebration.

Committee objectives are as follows:

  • Provide a platform for participants to share personal observations regarding sexual violence at The Ohio State University
  • Educate participants in university protocol and processes in sexual violence prevention and support
  • Create and share action steps for individuals and groups to move forward in their sexual violence prevention and response efforts
  • Draft informed recommendations and feedback for university response to campus and nationwide events involving sexual violence

Jennifer Beard, director of the Women's Place, will lead a Lunch & Learn session for members and supporters of ASFW. During this time, attendees will discuss the 2017 Status Report on Women, trends in higher education, and current goals and activities for The Women's Place. The discussion will also focus on how attendees can be engaged in these initiatives and will include a Q&A session. ASFW Lunch & Learn events are brown bag activities. Julie will address a new way to define work-life balance, provide an overview of the 7 Keys, and go deeper into an explanation of Key 2 — creating boundaries.

Ready to Run - Campaign Training for Women

Ready to Run® is a non-partisan campaign training program to encourage and train women to run for elective office, position themselves for appointive office, work on a campaign, or get involved in public life in other ways.

Ready to Run is the first such program of its kind in Ohio and is modeled after the national program at Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP).

As a one-day conference, the program will address navigating political parties as a potential candidate, fund-raising for success, social media training, and an overview of the key elements to launching a political campaign.

On Monday, May 1, 2017, Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr. will be the featured speaker for the pre-conference. Dr. Moore is recognized as one of the nation’s top motivational speakers and educators, especially for his work with students in K-16. He has pursued and achieved success in academia, business, diversity, leadership and community service. In 1996, he started America & MOORE, LLC to provide comprehensive diversity, privilege and leadership trainings and workshops.

We will be honored to have an additional powerhouse on Tuesday, May 2, 2017: Christopher B. Howard, PhD, the eighth president of Robert Morris University, a nationally-ranked institution in suburban Pittsburgh, will deliver the closing keynote and participate in a panel discussion. Dr. Howard is a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he earned a BS in political science in 1991. A Rhodes scholar, he earned his doctorate in politics at the University of Oxford and an MBA with distinction from the Harvard Business School. A retired Air Force reserve lieutenant colonel, Dr. Howard served as a helicopter pilot after earning his doctorate, and then became an intelligence officer for the elite Joint Special Operations Command.

The conference, hosted by the Office of Human Resources and the University Staff Advisory Committee (USAC), is a great opportunity for managers to learn innovative approaches to management, network with Ohio State colleagues, and receive a professional development book.

Made possible through the Staff Manager Development Grant program, this conference brings managers a development opportunity worth hundreds of dollars at no cost to them or their units. Registration opens March 31, 2017 and seats are limited.
