Joyce K. Fletcher, DBA, Affiliated Faculty

Joyce K. Fletcher is an Affiliated Faculty at the Center for Gender in Organizations,Professor of Management at the SIMMONS Graduate School of Management and Senior Research Scholar at the Jean Baker Miller Training Institute at the Wellesley College Centers for Women. Before coming to CGO she spent 15 years as Associate Professor of Cooperative Education for the College of Business Administration at Northeastern University. She received her doctoral degree in Organizational Behavior from Boston University's School of Management, where her dissertation research "Toward a Theory of Relational Practice: A Feminist Reconstruction of 'Real' Work" explored the social construction of gender in the workplace.

Dr. Fletcher has published widely in both management and education journals, including the Journal of Management Inquiry, the Journal of Organizational Change Management, and the Harvard Business Review. She has also contributed to numerous books, manuscripts, and research monographs on business management issues including the Ford Foundation study of work and family, "Re linking Life and Work: Toward a Better Future" (with Rapaport et al., 1996), a research project exploring new dimensions of leadership sponsored by the Society for Organizational Learning, "The Ecology of Leadership" (with Kauefer & Senge 1999), and an action research project to promote gender equity, "Engendering Organizational Change" (with Merrill-Sands et al.1999). In her consulting and research projects she uses relational theory and feminist concepts of power to study and intervene in organizational practices in ways that would improve both equity and effectiveness.

Dr. Fletcher is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences on the topics of gender, leadership, and power in the workplace. Her new book, Disappearing Acts: Gender, Power and Relational Practice at Work (MIT Press, 1999), addresses the subtle dynamics that "disappear" women at work and the consequences of these disappearing acts for women, men, and organizational effectiveness.
